BEHIND THE ARTIST
Rebecca Lea McCarthy is an actor, writer, improv artist, and educator. She earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Studies and teaches ethics, Communication, Rhetoric, and Theatre. She divides her time between Utah and Hawai'i where she is active in both theatre communities. Her first book, Origins of the Magdalene Laundries, explores the long history and evolution behind these so-called “reform” institutions. Her second book, Writing the Diaphragm Blues and Other Sexual Cacophonies, examines female sexuality from childhood to menopause. The book was the inspiration for Rebecca’s one-woman show: Singing the Diaphragm Blues, directed by Dale Westgaard, which successfully previewed in 2014 at the 4th Wall Theatre in Puyallup, Washington, and appeared at the O'ahu International Fringe Festival in 2015.
